Crescent City reading order
Sarah J. Maas’s Crescent City novels in publication order, and why House of Sky and Breath is a spoiler engine for ACOTAR and Throne of Glass.
Start here
House of Earth and Blood
It is Crescent City book one (2020). The later novels assume that first case. If you also care about ACOTAR and Throne of Glass, finish those series before book two of this one.
Crescent City is readable as its own urban-fantasy case file. The complication is crossover. Bloomsbury notes that the Crescent City experience is richer if you already know ACOTAR. Later volumes go further than richness: they name other worlds.
See ACOTAR and Throne of Glass.
The three novels
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2020 | Start here. | Amazon | |
| 2 | 2022 | Crossover weight increases. After ACOTAR and TOG if you want those endings intact. | Amazon | |
| 3 | 2024 | Further convergence. Not a starting point. | Amazon |
Publication order is the only Crescent City order. There is no prequel collection hiding in front of book one.
House rule:
- If Crescent City is your only Maas series, start here and keep going.
- If you also want ACOTAR and TOG unspoiled, read those first (in either order relative to each other), then CC.
- Do not start CC on book two because a clip said “that’s when it gets good.”
Common mistakes
- Starting with House of Sky and Breath.
- Treating CC as ACOTAR book 6.
- Reading CC 2–3 before Kingdom of Ash and then being angry at a reading-order page.
- Waiting for a fourth CC novel before opening book one.
What to read next
- ACOTAR (Sarah J. Maas) — If you have not read it and you want the other door the later CC books are using.
- Throne of Glass (Sarah J. Maas) — Same reason, other continent.
- Empyrean (Rebecca Yarros) — If you want another unfinished romantasy with no crossover homework.
- The Dresden Files (Jim Butcher) — If the city-as-case was the hook, in a much longer publication list.
- Rivers of London (Ben Aaronovitch) — If you want police work in a city that keeps being the crime.
FAQ
Do I need ACOTAR first?
Not for book one. Yes, if you want later CC books not to step on ACOTAR.
Do I need Throne of Glass first?
Same answer, especially before book two.
Is the series finished?
Three novels are published. Do not treat that as a promise that the story is closed.
Can I read CC before TOG?
Yes, if you accept crossover cost from book two on.
