The Craft Sequence reading order

Do not start with Last First Snow just because it is “book 1” in the title numbers. Those numbers are internal chronology, not bookstore order. Gladstone wrote the first five books out of time on purpose.

Tor has also marketed Dead Country (Craft Wars, 2023) as a standalone entry to the world. That is a later-series on-ramp, written after Tara Abernathy already has a career. It is a fair door if you specifically want the war quartet. It is a poor door if you want the Sequence as Gladstone published it.

House rule: Sequence first-timers start at Three Parts Dead. Use Dead Country only if you are aiming at Craft Wars and you accept missing earlier texture.

Publication order (first read)

Gladstone has said that if you want an order, it is probably publication order — the order he wrote and read them.

Each book is built to stand alone. Characters still cross. Publication order is how the reveals were aimed.

Chronological order (the title numbers)

For the first five books, the number in the title is the internal chronology. The Ruin of Angels has no number; Gladstone describes the first five as a complete unit and everything after as moving forward in time.

Chronology is a reread tool, or a path for someone who already bounced off publication order and wants the Dresediel Lex story in calendar time. It is not cleaner. Last First Snow is a prequel that leans on knowing what the later city became. Two Serpents Rise hides things that Last First Snow will have already shown.

This is a contested order. We are not pretending otherwise. First read: publication.

Craft Wars (after the Sequence)

A later quartet, publication order:

Gladstone has described Dead Hand Rule as the second-to-last Craft book, with one volume still to come. Do not treat Craft Wars as Sequence books 7–9. It is a tighter endgame written after the first season.

Choice-of-game titles (Choice of the Deathless, Deathless: The City’s Thirst) are canon-adjacent extras. They do not belong in the novel column.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Last First Snow because the title has a 1 in it.
• Starting with Dead Country because a publisher page said “perfect entry point,” then wondering why Tara already has a résumé.
• Numbering the Craft Wars books as Sequence 7–9.
• Insisting there is one piety. Gladstone built the first five to be readable out of order. Publication is still the default.
