Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle in publication order — Eragon through Inheritance — then The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm and Murtagh, labeled as later books.

Eragon
It is book one (2003). The later novels assume that first egg. Do not start with Murtagh because the newest hardcover says you can. Do not start with the 2006 film.
Four novels make the Cycle. They are a finished argument. Everything after them is a return to the same country, not a new book one.
Paolini’s own pages are blunt: Murtagh is a direct sequel to the original four and to The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm. It is set about a year after Inheritance. That is a later door. It is not Eragon 0.

Publisher copy has called Murtagh a possible first visit. This house does not. The book spends the Cycle’s ending. Read the four first.
The Book of Remembrance is a later Kickstarter collection of World of Eragon stories. Optional extra. Not Inheritance 5, and not a substitute for Eragon.
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars is Fractalverse science fiction. It is not a secret dragon prequel.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Murtagh because a jacket called it an entry.
- Starting with Inheritance because it is the title of the Cycle.
- Treating the 2006 film as a table of contents.
- Mixing in the coloring book, almanac, or illustrated edition as a fifth novel.
What to read next
