The Dark Tower reading order
Stephen King’s Dark Tower novels in published sequence, where The Wind Through the Keyhole sits, and which related King books are optional rather than homework.

The Gunslinger
It is Dark Tower book one (1982; revised 2003). Do not start with The Wind Through the Keyhole. Do not start with The Stand because a chart said it is “connected.”
This is a Dark Tower page, not a map of every King novel that winks at the Beam. The seven numbered books plus one mid-series novel are the path. The rest is optional weather.
If you want King’s detective door instead, use Bill Hodges or the Holly Gibney path. If you want a first King without a quest, use the starter path.

Publication order is the Tower order. There is no honest “start at book five because the movie did.”
The Wind Through the Keyhole

Contested placement, labeled: King has said this one stands on its own and also sits between books 4 and 5. For a first read, either:
- read the seven, then Keyhole, or
- insert Keyhole after Wizard and Glass if you already have it.
Do not start with it. Do not postpone The Gunslinger until you own it.
Related King books — optional
Charts that require The Stand, ’Salem’s Lot, Insomnia, Hearts in Atlantis, and Everything’s Eventual before Roland are doing Cosmere-spreadsheet energy in Maine. Those books reward a later reread. They are not Dark Tower 0.
House rule: read the Tower. If a later volume makes you curious about a specific other King title, go read that title then. Do not build a 20-book prerequisite list.
The 2017 film is a cousin that compresses. It is not a table of contents.
Common mistakes
- Starting with the 2017 movie and then opening Wolves of the Calla.
- Reading The Stand first “so the Tower makes sense.”
- Skipping The Gunslinger because someone said the revised edition is required and your library has the old one. Either text is book one; the revised is what most new copies are.
- Treating Keyhole as book one because it is friendlier.

- Stephen King starter path — If the Tower was a lot and you want single-volume doors.
- The Lord of the Rings (J. R. R. Tolkien) — If you want another quest whose extra history should stay extra.
- The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) — If you want a finished long epic with a prequel that should stay a prequel.

Either is book one. New printings are usually the 2003 revision.
Do I need The Stand first?
No.
Where does Keyhole go?
Between 4 and 5, or after the seven. Not first.
Is the series finished?
The seven plus Keyhole are the published Tower path.
