Discworld Rincewind reading order
The Rincewind novels from The Colour of Magic to The Last Hero, why publication order is the wizard order, and why Unseen Academicals is a different street.
Start here
The Colour of Magic
It is the first Discworld novel and the first Rincewind novel (1983). You do not need the Watch, the Witches, or Death first. You also do not have to stay on this street if the tone is too early-Pratchett for you.
This page is the Rincewind spine. It is not 41 novels in one table. For the city see City Watch. For the coven see Witches. For Death see Death. For the post office see Moist von Lipwig.
If someone told you “start anywhere,” they are half right about the Disc and wrong about this coward. Rincewind’s books are a travel sequence. The Luggage accumulates. So does the joke about being qualified as a wizard.
The Rincewind novels
Publication order is the Rincewind order.

The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic are a pair. Do not stop after the first tourist pamphlet and call it Discworld.
Eric is sometimes shelved as a story or an illustrated oddity. It is still the fourth Rincewind book, not optional homework you do before Sourcery.
The Last Hero is a Rincewind-and-Cohen book with pictures. It is the end of this line, not Watch #9 and not a coffee-table extra you skip because the type is large.
Unseen Academicals is a different street
Unseen Academicals (2009) is Unseen University and football. Rincewind can appear. It is not Rincewind 8.
The Science of Discworld books are essays with a story wrapper. They are not this guide. Skip them as an on-ramp.
Optional paths
- Rincewind only. The Colour of Magic through The Last Hero. This is the guide.
- A different Discworld door if early Rincewind feels like a parody that has not yet become a city. Witches, Death, and City Watch are the usual other first streets.
- Full Discworld publication order if you are collecting the whole Disc. That is a different project.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Interesting Times because someone said the early books are “just pastiche.”
- Treating The Last Hero as a picture book you can ignore.
- Stuffing Unseen Academicals into the numbered Rincewind column.
- Opening a 41-book chart and postponing The Colour of Magic for a year.
What to read next
- Discworld — Moist von Lipwig — If you want the later Ankh-Morpork industrial books, which are a cleaner modern door than early Rincewind.
- Discworld City Watch — If you want the other main city job.
- Discworld Witches — If you want the coven instead of the failed wizard.
- Artemis Fowl (Eoin Colfer) — If the incompetent-competent travel comedy was the hook, in a different shop.
- Stop after The Last Hero. You do not owe the whole Disc.
FAQ
Is Rincewind a good Discworld starting point?
It is the historical one. It is not always the kindest one. Watch, Witches, and Death are the usual other doors.
Do I need The Light Fantastic immediately?
Yes, if you started The Colour of Magic. They are a pair.
What about Unseen Academicals?
Later, if you want University football. Not Rincewind 8.
Whole Discworld?
Not on this page.
