Divergent reading order
Veronica Roth’s Divergent trilogy in publication order, then Four and We Can Be Mended — extras labeled so they do not become book one.
Start here
Divergent
It is book one (2011). The two sequels assume that first choosing. Do not start with Four. Do not start with Allegiant because the film is the one people argue about.
A finished trilogy, then a companion volume, then a short epilogue. Publication order is the first-read path. Chronology inside Four runs earlier and then beside book one. That is why it is a later book.
Roth has said, in so many words, to read the published trilogy first and save Four until after. The companion assumes you already know the factions and what they cost.
The trilogy
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2011 | Start here. | Amazon | |
| 2 | 2012 | Amazon | ||
| 3 | 2013 | Ends Tris’s run. | Amazon |
There is no contested order inside these three. The films follow this spine until they do not; the books still do.
Extras — after, not before
| Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four: A Divergent Collection | 2014 | Companion. After the trilogy. Not Divergent 0. | Amazon |
| 2018 | Short epilogue. After Allegiant. After Four if you want publication order among the extras. | Amazon |
Contested order, labeled: chronological charts put The Transfer, The Initiate, and The Son before Divergent, then The Traitor beside it. Roth’s own advice is the opposite of that chart for a first read. Four does not rebuild the world. It assumes you already live there.
House rule:
- Divergent
- Insurgent
- Allegiant
- Four if you want Tobias’s earlier rooms
- We Can Be Mended if you want the short afterword
Carve the Mark is a different Roth series. It is not Divergent 6.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Four because the stories are “earlier.”
- Starting with Allegiant because that is the argument people remember from the cinema.
- Treating We Can Be Mended as a required fifth novel.
- Searching “Divergent” and picking up a film tie-in or companion as book one.
What to read next
- Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) — If you want the other 2010s arena trilogy, with prequels that should stay prequels.
- The Maze Runner (James Dashner) — If you want another closed system whose prequels look like a new book one.
- Shatter Me (Tahereh Mafi) — If you want a YA dystopia that keeps the same voice past three books.
- An Ember in the Ashes (Sabaa Tahir) — If you want another finished YA quartet whose graphic prequels should stay later.
- Stop at Allegiant. The three are a complete visit. The extras are optional aftercare.
FAQ
Do I need Four?
No. The trilogy ends.
Should I read Four between Divergent and Insurgent?
Not for a first read. Roth prefers the published trilogy first.
Is We Can Be Mended a novel?
No. It is a short epilogue.
Movie order?
The first two films follow the books more closely than the third. None of them is a reason to start at Four.
