Reckoners reading order
Brandon Sanderson’s Reckoners trilogy in publication order — Steelheart, Firefight, Calamity — then Mitosis and Lux, labeled so the Texas book is not book one.
Start here
Steelheart
It is book one (2013). The two sequels assume that first city. This is not Cosmere. Do not start with Calamity. Do not start with Lux.
A finished trilogy, a novella between the first two, and a later Texas spin-off. Publication order is the path.
Sanderson’s on-ramp page files Reckoners with his non-Cosmere work. Skyward is a different YA SF door. See the Skyward guide. For Cosmere doors, use the Cosmere starter.
The trilogy
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2013 | Start here. | Amazon | |
| 2 | 2015 | Amazon | ||
| 3 | 2016 | Ends David’s three. | Amazon |
Mitosis and Lux
| Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | Novella. After Steelheart, before Firefight if you have it. | Amazon | |
| 2021 | Texas Reckoners novel, with Steven Bohls. After the trilogy. Not Steelheart 0. | Amazon |
House rule: Steelheart, insert Mitosis if you have it, Firefight, Calamity. Lux is a later team in the same Epic-haunted country. It arrived as audio first. It is not a fourth David novel, and it is not an on-ramp.
Penguin’s Reckoners series page still lists the original three as the spine. That is correct.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Lux because it is a “new Reckoners.”
- Starting with Calamity because the title matches the orbiting object.
- Treating this as Cosmere homework.
- Stalling the trilogy on Mitosis.
What to read next
- Skyward (Brandon Sanderson) — If you want his other finished-looking YA SF door, which is also not Cosmere.
- Red Rising (Pierce Brown) — If you want another climb out of a color-coded underclass, much longer.
- Dungeon Crawler Carl (Matt Dinniman) — If the game-like violence was the hook, in a different register.
- Mistborn Era 1 (Brandon Sanderson) — If you want his Cosmere revolt trilogy, as itself.
- Stop after Calamity. The three are a complete visit.
