Harry Potter reading order
The seven Harry Potter novels in publication order, plus optional Fantastic Beasts, Hogwarts library extras, and Cursed Child — labeled so they do not look like book one.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
US printings say Sorcerer’s Stone. Same first novel (1997). Do not start with Fantastic Beasts. Do not start with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
There is no honest debate about the seven novels. Publication order is the story order. The clutter is everything that sits beside them: screenplays, Hogwarts “textbooks,” a stage script, and illustrated extras that retailers file next to book one.
This page keeps the seven in a numbered column and labels the rest optional.
The seven novels
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1997 | US: Sorcerer’s Stone. Start here. | Amazon | |
| 2 | 1998 | Amazon | ||
| 3 | 1999 | Amazon | ||
| 4 | 2000 | Amazon | ||
| 5 | 2003 | Amazon | ||
| 6 | 2005 | Amazon | ||
| 7 | 2007 | Amazon |
Illustrated editions and adult covers are the same novels. The films follow this spine more closely than most adaptations do. Film order is still not a reason to skip a book.
Optional Hogwarts extras
These look like homework. They are not novels 8–10.
| Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2001 | In-world textbook. Optional. Not a novel. | Amazon | |
| 2001 | In-world textbook. Optional. | Amazon | |
| 2008 | In-world tales. After Deathly Hallows if you want them. | Amazon | |
| 2016 | Pottermore extras. Skip on a first pass. | Amazon | |
| Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists | 2016 | Same shelf. | Amazon |
| Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide | 2016 | Same shelf. Not a hidden book eight. | Amazon |
The three 2016 Hogwarts e-books collect website writing. They are not a second series.
Fantastic Beasts screenplays and Cursed Child
Labeled optional because shops file them as if they continue the seven.
| Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | Film script. Different format, earlier century. After the seven if at all. | Amazon | |
| 2018 | Screenplay. Optional. | Amazon | |
| Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore | 2022 | Screenplay. Optional. | Amazon |
| 2016 | Stage play script, with Jack Thorne and John Tiffany. Not novel 8. | Amazon |
House rule: read the seven. Stop. If you want more of the same desk, the Beedle tales are the least confusing extra. The Fantastic Beasts films are a prequel cousin; the published screenplays are scripts, not the next Harry novel. Cursed Child is a play that continues characters after book seven. It is widely treated as extra-canonical by readers who want the seven to end where they end. This page does not make you read it.
Common mistakes
- Starting with a Fantastic Beasts screenplay because the film is “first chronologically.”
- Treating Cursed Child as Harry Potter book 8.
- Buying Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (the slim textbook) thinking it is the movie story.
- Waiting for a new Hogwarts novel before opening Philosopher’s Stone.
- Mixing US and UK titles and thinking Sorcerer’s Stone is a different first book.
What to read next
- Narnia (C. S. Lewis) — If you want another children’s door with a publication-versus-chronology argument, much shorter.
- His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman) — If you want another finished trilogy about growing out of a first world’s rules.
- The Scholomance (Naomi Novik) — If the school-as-machine was the hook and you want a later, sharper version.
- Percy Jackson (Rick Riordan) — If you want another long camp-and-quest spine with clearly labeled later cycles.
- The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) — If seven books felt short and you want a finished long epic with a prequel that should stay a prequel.
