Temeraire reading order

Naomi Novik’s Temeraire novels in publication order from His Majesty’s Dragon to League of Dragons — a finished Napoleonic run, not Scholomance.

His Majesty's Dragon

It is book one (2006). In the UK it has been sold as Temeraire. Same novel. The eight sequels assume that first hatching. Do not start with League of Dragons. This is not Scholomance.

Nine novels. Publication order is the only path. The war moves. So does the partnership.

Novik’s later school trilogy is a different shelf. See Scholomance. Uprooted and Spinning Silver are standalones. They are not Temeraire 0.

Read them in this order. The first three arrived in one year. That is a publishing fact, not a reason to start at book three.

Golden Age and Other Stories (2017) is a later collection. Optional. Not Temeraire 10, and not an on-ramp.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with League of Dragons because it is the finale on a list.
  • Starting with Throne of Jade because China is the part you heard about.
  • Treating this as a Scholomance extra.
  • Searching “Temeraire” and picking up the UK book-one title as if it were a different series.
  1. The Scholomance (Naomi Novik) — If you want her other finished trilogy, which is a school, not a dragon transport.
  2. His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman) — If you want another partnership that is also an argument about the world.
  3. The Inheritance Cycle (Christopher Paolini) — If you want another dragon-and-rider ladder, younger and finished in four.
  4. Earthsea (Ursula K. Le Guin) — If you want an older, shorter wizard path with a publication-versus-later-books problem.
  5. Stop after League of Dragons. The nine are a complete visit.
