Iron Druid Chronicles reading order

A finished run. Hearne’s own chronology page is the source for where the shorts go. Publication order of the novels is the first-read path. Besieged is a collection he calls vital even though it is not a conventional novel. It still is not book one.

Ink & Sigil is a later neighboring series. After Scourged if you want it. Not Iron Druid 0.

The novels

Hearne numbers Besieged as book 9 on his chronology page: ten stories, some from Atticus’s past, some after Staked, bridging into Scourged. Retailer lists sometimes put Scourged before Besieged. Use his page, not the sort order.

House rule: novels 1–8, then Besieged, then Scourged. If you only have the novels, read 1–8 and Scourged and know you skipped a bridge he considers load-bearing.

Shorts and Oberon — optional

Keep these out of the numbered novel column except where a later trade edition already binds them to a novel.

A first read can be the ten objects in the novel table. If you want the shorts, use Hearne’s chronology page rather than chasing every anthology appearance. Trade reissues moved several shorts to the backs of the novels. That is a catalog convenience, not a new order.

Common mistakes

• Starting at Dead Beat—wrong series. That is Dresden.
• Starting with Scourged because it is the last book and “the payoff.”
• Reading Besieged first because short stories look like a sampler.
• Treating Ink & Sigil as Iron Druid book one.
• Using a retailer list that files Besieged after Scourged.

What to read next

1. The Dresden Files (Jim Butcher) — If you want the other long wizard-for-hire run, still unfinished, with collections that are not novels.

FAQ

Do I have to read Besieged?
Hearne says it is vital as a bridge. It is still not an on-ramp. If you skip it, go Staked then Scourged and accept the gap.

Can I start with Grimoire of the Lamb?
You can. You will meet Atticus without the series’ first case. This house starts at Hounded.

Is the series finished?
The Chronicles end at Scourged. Ink & Sigil continues the neighborhood.

Where do the Oberon mysteries go?
After Staked, as extras. Not Iron Druid 8.5 required homework.
