Lightbringer reading order
Brent Weeks’s Lightbringer novels in publication order from The Black Prism to The Burning White — a finished five, not Night Angel.
Start here
The Black Prism
It is book one (2010). The four sequels assume that first spectrum. Do not start with The Burning White. Do not start with The Broken Eye because an old “it was going to be a trilogy” post made book three look like a finale.
Five novels. Publication order is the only path. The series was discussed at different projected lengths while it was being written. The published object is five. Older forum posts that stop at book three are leftovers, not a door.
The Night Angel books are a different Weeks shelf. They are not Lightbringer 0.
The five novels
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2010 | Start here. | Amazon | |
| 2 | 2012 | Amazon | ||
| 3 | 2014 | Not a finale. Not an on-ramp. | Amazon | |
| 4 | 2016 | Amazon | ||
| 5 | 2019 | Closes the five. | Amazon |
Read them in this order. There is no honest mid-series start.
Gunner’s Apprentice is an optional short Weeks released around The Broken Eye. If you want it, after The Blinding Knife. It is not book 2.5 required homework.
Common mistakes
- Starting with The Broken Eye because someone remembered Lightbringer as a trilogy.
- Starting with The Burning White because it is the last hardcover.
- Treating Night Angel as a prequel.
- Searching “Lightbringer” and picking up a later Weeks project as book one.
What to read next
- Powder Mage (Brian McClellan) — If you want another finished magic-and-war epic with a sequel trilogy that looks like a new book one.
- Mistborn Era 1 (Brandon Sanderson) — If you want another complete magic-system argument before anyone mentions a second era.
- The First Law (Joe Abercrombie) — If you want another long fantasy street about what power costs the people who hold it.
- The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) — If five books were not enough epic and you want the finished long one.
- Stop after The Burning White. The five are a complete visit.
