First Law reading order

Abercrombie’s site groups the world the way the books were written: First Law trilogy, then three standalones in that world, then Sharp Ends, then the Age of Madness trilogy. Publication order is chronology for the novels that matter. That is not an accident.

The Devils (2025) is a new series. It is not First Law book 11. The Shattered Sea is a different trilogy. Leave both off this spine.

The original trilogy

Read these three in order. There is no contested start inside the trilogy.

The three standalones

They are standalone in the sense that each has a new main job. They are not standalone in the sense that they forget the trilogy. Age of Madness later assumes you know what these books did to the map.

House rule: trilogy, then these three, in publication order. Skipping them to “get to the sequel trilogy” skips the generation Age of Madness is answering.

Sharp Ends

The stories sit all over the timeline. Some are earlier than the trilogy. That does not make the collection book 0. Read it after Red Country, or skip it. A later pamphlet, The Great Change (And Other Lies) (2023), is more Age of Madness extra. Same rule: after the novels it sits beside, not as homework.

If you only wanted one finished grimdark trilogy, you can stop after Last Argument of Kings. That is a complete story. It is not the whole First Law world Abercrombie kept writing.

Common mistakes

• Starting with A Little Hatred because a shop called it a new series. It is a sequel generation.
• Starting with Best Served Cold because “standalone” looked safer.
• Treating the standalones as optional flavor text before Age of Madness.
• Sliding The Devils or Shattered Sea into the numbered column.
• Reading Sharp Ends first because some stories are earlier.

What to read next

1. Malazan Book of the Fallen (Steven Erikson) — If you want another campaign that will not flatter you, Erikson’s ten are the harder next step, with an honest difficulty warning.
2. Red Rising (Pierce Brown) — If the pleasure was a revolt that has to live with itself, in space instead of mud.
3. The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) — If you want the opposite temperature: a finished long epic that still believes institutions can be aimed.
4. The Craft Sequence (Max Gladstone) — If the politics-as-machinery was the hook, with less blood on the floor and more contract law.
5. The Devils (Joe Abercrombie) — If you want this writer in a new setting, with no First Law homework.

Can I read Age of Madness first?
You can. You will be standing in a family argument you did not attend.

Are the standalones required?
Required for the world as Abercrombie continued it. Not required if you only wanted the original trilogy.
