Empire of Silence
It is book one (2018). The later novels are the same confession. Do not start with Shadows Upon Time. Do not start with a novella.
Seven novels. A finished Hadrian path when this page was checked. Publication order is the only path. Ruocchio has published a suggested intercalary order for novellas and story collections; those extras are optional.

House rule: read the seven novels. Insert a novella if you have it. Do not postpone Empire of Silence until you own every Tales of the Sun Eater volume. The Murdered Sun has been described as a non-canonical early version of book one; it is not a prequel and not an on-ramp.
This is not Dune, even when a blurb rhymes. You do not need Herbert first.

- Starting with book seven because it is the ending.
- Treating the novellas as required homework.
- Opening a Cosmere-style spreadsheet of every short.
