The Selection reading order
Kiera Cass’s Selection novels in publication order — The Selection through The Crown — Happily Ever After labeled so The Prince is not book one.
Start here
The Selection
It is book one (2012). The later novels assume that first contest. Do not start with The Heir. Do not start with The Prince.
Five novels. Cass’s 2015 series note listed them in publication order: America’s three, then Eadlyn’s two. That is still the first-read path.
Novellas collected in Happily Ever After are extras. Chronology charts put The Queen and The Prince before book one. That path hands you the palace before America walks in.
The novels
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |

| 4 | 2015 | Next generation. Not an on-ramp. | Amazon | |

Read them in this order.
Extra — after the novels, or after the first three
| Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2015 | Companion. The Prince, The Guard, The Queen, The Favorite, plus shorts. After the novels, or after The One. Not Selection 0. | Amazon |
Contested order, labeled:
- The five novels, then Happily Ever After. This house’s first recommendation.
- Novellas after the book they sit beside (The Prince after The Selection, The Guard after The Elite). Allowed if you already have the pieces. Still not a reason to start on Maxon.
- The Queen or The Prince first because they are earlier. Cass published them as companions. This house does not start there.
The Siren is a different Cass book.
Common mistakes
- Starting with The Heir because Eadlyn’s covers look newer.
- Starting with The Prince because it is “0.5.”
- Treating Happily Ever After as a sixth novel you need before The Crown.
- Expecting a sixth prose novel. Cass closed Illéa in The Crown.
What to read next
- The Lunar Chronicles (Marissa Meyer) — If you want another finished YA run whose prequel should stay after book three.
- Red Queen (Victoria Aveyard) — If you want another color-coded court with extras that look like a fifth novel.
- Legend (Marie Lu) — If you want another finished Republic trilogy, then a later fourth.
- The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) — If you want the other 2010s closed-system trilogy with prequels that should stay prequels.
- Stop after The One. America’s three are a complete visit. Eadlyn is optional appetite.

Do I need the novellas?
No.
Can I start at The Heir?
