Legend reading order

Marie Lu’s Legend trilogy in publication order, then Rebel — the later fourth labeled so it is not book one, and Life Before Legend stays a novella.

Legend

It is book one (2011). The two sequels assume that first Republic. Rebel is book four, a decade later. Do not start there. Do not start with Life Before Legend.

A finished trilogy, then a later fourth. Publication order is the first-read path. Chronological charts put a prequel novella first. That novella assumes you already know the wanted posters.

Lu’s site calls Rebel book 4 in the Legend series. Penguin lists four books. The original three still end as a visit.

The original trilogy

Read them in this order. There is no contested start inside these three.

Later book and extras

TitleYearNotesAmazon
Life Before Legend2013Prequel novella. After the trilogy for a first read. Not Legend 0.Amazon
Rebel2019Book 4. About a decade later. After Champion. Not an on-ramp.Amazon

Contested order, labeled: chronological lists put Life Before Legend first. It is origin texture. It does not rebuild the Republic. House rule: Legend, Prodigy, Champion, then Rebel if you want the later generation. Insert the novella after the three if you have it.

Life After Legend pieces are short epilogue extras, not novels. Optional after Champion. Not a reason to skip Rebel, and not a reason to start there.

Warcross and The Young Elites are different Lu shelves.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with Rebel because it says book 4 and Eden is on the cover.
  • Starting with Life Before Legend because it is “before.”
  • Treating the original three as optional preamble to Rebel.
  • Mixing in Warcross as Legend 5.
  1. Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) — If you want another closed-system trilogy whose later books look earlier.
  2. Divergent (Veronica Roth) — If you want the other 2010s YA run people still start in the extras.
  3. The Maze Runner (James Dashner) — If you want another wanted-poster dystopia with prequels that should stay prequels.
  4. The Lunar Chronicles (Marissa Meyer) — If you want another finished YA run whose prequel should stay after book three.
  5. Stop after Champion. The original three are a complete visit.
