The Expanse reading order
The nine Expanse novels from Leviathan Wakes to Leviathan Falls, where the novellas sit, what Memory’s Legion is for, and why chronological prequels spoil.
Starting point
Start with Leviathan Wakes. It is book one of nine. Do not start with a novella. Do not start with Memory’s Legion. Do not start with a prequel because someone online said “chronological is more complete.”
James S. A. Corey is Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. The novels are the spine. The shorter fiction is connective tissue, and several pieces are earlier in time than the book that makes them safe.
Publication order: the nine novels
| # | Title | US year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leviathan Wakes | 2011 |
| 2 | Caliban’s War | 2012 |
| 3 | Abaddon’s Gate | 2013 |
| 4 | Cibola Burn | 2014 |
| 5 | Nemesis Games | 2015 |
| 6 | Babylon’s Ashes | 2016 |
| 7 | Persepolis Rising | 2017 |
| 8 | Tiamat’s Wrath | 2019 |
| 9 | Leviathan Falls | 2021 |
This is the first-read path. If you only do one order, do this.
Novellas and shorts in publication order
Insert these after the novel they followed into bookstores, or save them all for Memory’s Legion after you finish the novels. Either is honest. Reordering them to “when they happen” is how people get spoiled.
| Title | Appeared | After this novel (bookstore order) | First-read note |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Butcher of Anderson Station | 2011 | Leviathan Wakes | Optional. Earlier in a character’s life. |
| Gods of Risk | 2012 | Caliban’s War | Optional follow-up, not a missing chapter of book two. |
| Drive | 2012 | Caliban’s War / anthology | Far-back origin short. Safe-ish, still not a starting point. |
| The Churn | 2014 | Abaddon’s Gate | Prequel. Better once you already know who you are watching. |
| The Vital Abyss | 2015 | Nemesis Games | Flagged wording. See below. |
| Strange Dogs | 2017 | Babylon’s Ashes | Sets up later books; do not read first. |
| The Last Flight of the Cassandra | 2019 | — | RPG extra. Ignore on a first novel pass. |
| Auberon | 2019 | Tiamat’s Wrath | Optional, after the late novels it sits beside. |
| The Sins of Our Fathers | 2022 | Leviathan Falls | Coda. Lives in Memory’s Legion. |
Memory’s Legion
Memory’s Legion (2022) collects the principal Expanse short fiction and adds author’s notes, including the post-series novella. Use it as:
- a one-volume cleanup after Leviathan Falls, or
- a way to catch novellas you skipped, in the order the collection prints them.
Do not use it as book one. A collection that includes prequels and a coda is a toolbox, not a prologue.
Chronological prequels spoil — first read publication
Several shorts take place before or alongside early novels. That does not make them on-ramps.
- The Churn is an Amos-beforehand story. Meeting Amos in the novels first is the point.
- The Butcher of Anderson Station fills in a past that the novels already know how to withhold.
- The Vital Abyss runs across years that include events the early novels treat as discoveries.
- Drive is historically early and still a poor first impression of the series voice.
If a chart on the internet says “true chronological order,” treat it as a reread toy. First read: publication order.
Flag: The Vital Abyss wording
We are not quoting retailer or publisher copy for this novella.
Some official and storefront descriptions tell you whose custody you are in, which catastrophe you are circling, and what kind of research the narrators were doing. That is mid-series furniture. A reader who is still in the first two novels should not meet that furniture in a blurb.
House rule: link the title, give the publication year, and say “read it in publication sequence, not as a prequel appetizer.” If you need to warn someone, warn them that the marketing text is the spoiler, then stop.
Human review should glance at the current Amazon/Orbit description and confirm we still should not quote it.
Optional arcs
- Novels only. Completely valid. You will understand the nine-book argument.
- Novels, then Memory’s Legion. Best cleanup for people who do not want to buy novellas one at a time.
- Publication order with novellas interleaved. Best if you are reading as the books came out, or you like the author’s original drip of side stories.
- TV first, then novels. The show diverges. Do not use season order as a book order.
Common mistakes
- Starting with The Churn or Drive “because they are first.”
- Reading Memory’s Legion before Leviathan Wakes.
- Treating The Last Flight of the Cassandra as book 8.5.
- Trusting a Vital Abyss storefront paragraph.
What to read next
- The Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells) — If you want a smaller camera after nine books of system politics: one SecUnit, contracts, and media as coping. See our Murderbot guide.
- Revelation Space (Alastair Reynolds) — If the draw was deep-time artifacts and the sense that the universe is older and less kind than the crew.
- The Mercy of Gods (James S. A. Corey) — If you want the same writers, a new setting, and no homework from the Rocinante.
- A Memory Called Empire (Arkady Martine) — If the politics were the pleasure: ambassadors, language, and a capital that thinks it is the world.
- The Culture, starting with Player of Games (Iain M. Banks) — If you want post-scarcity machines and the moral hangover of intervention, without treating Consider Phlebas as a mandatory bruise. Culture is on the backlog as its own guide.
FAQ
Do I have to read the novellas?
No. They add character history and a few bridges. The nine novels close the series.
Is the show a substitute?
No. It is a cousin. Characters and late-plot choices diverge.
Where does Memory’s Legion go?
After Leviathan Falls, unless you are interleaving shorts as they were published.
Should I read The Vital Abyss before Cibola Burn because of the timeline?
No. Publication order. And do not read the blurb.

Human-review flags
- Re-check Vital Abyss storefront wording; keep this page quote-free.
- Confirm Memory’s Legion table of contents against a physical or publisher page.
- Keep The Last Flight of the Cassandra in the optional pile unless a new official reading list promotes it.
