Twilight reading order

Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels in publication order, plus Midnight Sun and the extras — labeled so Edward’s retelling is not book one.

Start here

Twilight

It is book one (2005). Midnight Sun is the same first novel from the other shoulder, published later. Do not start there. Do not start with Breaking Dawn.

A finished four-novel run, then retellings and extras. Publication of the four is the first-read path.

Retellings and extras

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner2010Novella. After Eclipse if you want it.Amazon
Life and Death2015Gender-swapped retelling of book one. Extra, not a fifth novel.Amazon
Midnight Sun2020Twilight from Edward’s POV. After you already know book one. Not an on-ramp.Amazon

House rule: read the four. Midnight Sun is aftercare or a reread toy. Starting there hands you book one’s events with a different narrator and none of the original door.

The films follow the four more closely than most adaptations. Film order is still not a reason to skip New Moon.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with Midnight Sun because it is the newest thick book.
  • Starting with Breaking Dawn because of a film still.
  • Treating Life and Death as Twilight 5.
  1. ACOTAR (Sarah J. Maas) — If you want another romance-forward supernatural door, later and longer.
  2. Shatter Me (Tahereh Mafi) — If you want another YA voice-driven run.
  3. Folk of the Air (Holly Black) — If you want faerie politics instead of vampires.
  4. Stop after Breaking Dawn. The four are a complete visit.
  5. Midnight Sun, on a second visit. If you want the same first book from the other chair.
