Every Heart a Doorway
McGuire’s own series page begins here (2016). Later books jump to other children’s doors. Those are not a gentler book one.
Wayward Children is a set of short novels about doors and the school that catches the children who come back. Publication order is the first-read path. Chronological charts that start with a later origin novella miss how the school is introduced.
Odd-numbered volumes tend to continue the school; even-numbered volumes often tell a single child’s earlier door. That pattern is a critic’s convenience, not a rule you must enforce. Read them as published.

House rule: start with Every Heart a Doorway. After that, publication order. You can skip an origin volume if a particular door is not for you; you will understand less of the later school books that lean on that child.
Do not start with In an Absent Dream because it is beloved. Do not start with the newest hardcover because it is newest.
What you can skip
Nothing is required after book one in the bookstore sense. The series is designed as a conversation. Skipping all the origin books gives you the school without the earlier lives. Skipping the school books and reading only origins gives you fairy tales without the hallway they share.

- Starting with a later origin because it is “first for that character.”
- Treating the series as 11 unrelated novellas you can shuffle.
- Waiting for a final volume before reading book one. The series is ongoing.
