Agatha Christie reading paths

Christie is not one series. Retailers stack fifty titles as if The Body in the Library were Styles 12. This page is two paths: the Poirot novels in publication order, and the Marple novels in publication order. Short-story collections stay labeled. Famous standalones stay off both ladders.

The official Christie site publishes separate Poirot and Marple reading lists. We follow those doors. We do not invent a single “complete Christie” spreadsheet.

Path A — Hercule Poirot (novels)

Publication order is the first read. The estate’s own list says you can hop; Curtain is still last. Hastings, the detective-fiction jokes, and Poirot’s age are cheaper if you start at Styles.

House rule: you do not owe all thirty-three. A first visit can stop after five. If you want the life of the detective, Curtain stays last.

Poirot shorts (Poirot Investigates, Murder in the Mews, The Labours of Hercules, and later gatherings) are optional. They are not secret novels sitting between these rows.

Path B — Miss Marple (novels)

Twelve novels. The first Marple appearance is in shorts later collected as The Thirteen Problems (1932). The first Marple novel is still The Murder at the Vicarage. For a first read, start there.

The Thirteen Problems (also The Tuesday Night Club) is the short-story door. Read it after Vicarage, or as a side plate. It is not a required prequel.

Nemesis assumes you already met certain people in A Caribbean Mystery. That pair is the one Marple sequence you should not shuffle.

Not on either ladder

These are real Christie books. They are not Poirot 34 or Marple 13.

Tommy and Tuppence, Parker Pyne, and the Westmacott books are other shelves. This page will not absorb them.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Murder on the Orient Express or Death on the Nile because a film is on.
• Starting with Curtain or Sleeping Murder because they look like finales and therefore “important.”
• Treating And Then There Were None as Poirot.
• Making one publication list of every Christie title and calling it a series.

What to read next

1. Sherlock Holmes (Arthur Conan Doyle) — If you want another finished detective canon with novels and labeled collections.
2. Thursday Murder Club (Richard Osman) — If you want a short modern club that really is one set of people.
3. Cormoran Strike (Robert Galbraith) — If you want a long contemporary partnership instead of a reset every village.
4. James Bond (Ian Fleming) — If you want a British run that is publication-first and refuses the film order.
5. Stop. One detective, five novels, is a complete Christie visit.

FAQ

Can I start with Orient Express?
You can follow that case. You will not have watched Poirot become expensive. Start with Styles if you want the path.

Do I need every Poirot short?
No.

Is Sleeping Murder a prequel?
It was written earlier and published last. Read it last among the Marple novels.

Which path if I only want one famous title?
And Then There Were None is the honest one-book Christie. It is not a series door.
