James Bond reading order

Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels and story collections in publication order from Casino Royale to Octopussy — films and continuation novels labeled so they are not book one.

Casino Royale

It is the first Bond novel (1953). The films start wherever a studio wanted a title. Do not start with Goldfinger because the movie is easy to find. Do not start with a continuation novel that has Fleming’s character and someone else’s sentences.

Fleming published one Bond book a year from Casino Royale to his death. The official James Bond Library lists those fourteen titles in the order they appeared. That is the first-read path.

The movies are a cousin franchise. They skip, remix, and rename. They are not a table of contents for the novels.

Fleming’s Bond, in publication order

Twelve novels and two short-story collections. The collections sit where they were published, not in a later “shorts appendix.”

Publication order is the Bond order. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, You Only Live Twice, and The Man with the Golden Gun spend what the earlier books earned. Starting on a later “best film” title will not tell you why those three are expensive.

The Spy Who Loved Me is still a Fleming Bond book. It is not an optional extra because the film reused the title and almost nothing else.

Films are not a reading order

Eon productions begin with Dr. No and then wander. Connery, Moore, Craig, and the rest are different arguments about the same name. Use a film list if you want the films. Do not use it to decide which novel is book one.

Continuation novels — later, and contested

After Fleming, other writers were hired to keep the name in print. They are not Fleming 15. The official library treats them as a later shelf.

A short, labeled sample — not a complete continuation chart:

TitleYearNotesAmazon
Colonel Sun1968First continuation novel (as Robert Markham). Optional later.Amazon
Trigger Mortis2015Authorized later novel. Not a new book one.Amazon
With a Mind to Kill2022Authorized. Sits after Fleming if you continue.Amazon

John Gardner, Raymond Benson, Sebastian Faulks, Jeffery Deaver, William Boyd, and others also wrote Bonds. If you want that later shelf, finish Fleming first, then pick one authorized continuation and treat it as itself. This page will not invent a 40-book “complete 007” that exists only to host links.

Young Bond and the spin-off comics are other doors. They are not on-ramps to Casino Royale.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with Goldfinger or Casino Royale the film and calling that the novel order.
  • Starting with Colonel Sun or a Horowitz Bond because the spine says James Bond.
  • Skipping For Your Eyes Only and then treating the later shorts as missing novels.
  • Waiting to “watch them in order” before opening book one.
  1. Sherlock Holmes (Arthur Conan Doyle) — If you want another long British crime path that is novels plus labeled collections, not a film order.
  2. Jack Reacher (Lee Child) — If you want another long professional-killer-adjacent run that admits which books are prequels.
  3. Agatha Christie paths (Agatha Christie) — If you want detection without the service revolver, in publication order.
  4. Cormoran Strike (Robert Galbraith) — If the partnership-over-time was more interesting than the set pieces.
  5. Stop after Fleming. Fourteen books is a finished argument. You do not owe the continuation shelf.

FAQ

Do I need the short-story collections?
For a first Fleming pass, read them where they sit. They are short. They are not secret novels.

Is the Craig Casino Royale a substitute for book one?
No. It is an adaptation of the first novel’s job, not a license to skip the book.

Which continuation first if I insist?
Colonel Sun is the first after Fleming. Horowitz is a later authorized voice. Neither is book one.

Publication or the films’ “Bond chronology”?
Publication. The films do not agree with each other.
