Michael J. Sullivan’s Riyria Revelations in publication order — Theft of Swords first — and why the Chronicles prequels are a later visit, not book one.

Theft of Swords
It is Revelations book one in the Orbit omnibus numbering (originally The Crown Conspiracy, 2008). The Crown Tower is a later-published Chronicle. Do not start there.
Sullivan wrote Revelations first, then went backward for Chronicles, then sideways for Legends of the First Empire. Publication of Revelations first is the house path. Chronological charts that start in the deep past are a reread project.

If you have the original six paperbacks, read them in that internal order: The Crown Conspiracy, Avempartha, Nyphron Rising, The Emerald Storm, Wintertide, Percepliquis. The omnibuses are the same six.

Contested order, labeled: Sullivan has said new readers can start with Chronicles if they want the duo younger. That is allowed. It is not kinder if you came for the original heist energy. House rule: Theft of Swords first. Chronicles after, if you want more Hadrian and Royce.
Legends of the First Empire and Rise and Fall are deeper history. After Revelations, not before. They will happily spoil the fun of discovering this world in Theft of Swords.
Common mistakes
- Starting with The Crown Tower because it is “first.”
- Starting with Age of Myth (Legends) because a complete-chronology chart said so.
- Buying only Percepliquis because the title sounds like an ending you can sneak up on.
