Revelation Space reading order

One universe, several objects. Reynolds’s own novels page is the source. He lists six Revelation Space books there and has since added more Prefect novels. Publication order across the universe is a valid history. It is not the kindest first read.

The inhibitor sequence

Reynolds: it probably improves things to read the first three in that sequence. Inhibitor Phase is a later return to the same argument. It is not a new book one.

Chasm City — standalone in the universe

Contested order, labeled: publication puts Chasm City between Revelation Space and Redemption Ark. Chronology and tone make it look like an origin for the city. Reynolds allows any point. This house reads it after Revelation Space, or after the original three, not first. It is a pursuit novel, not inhibitor book 0.

Prefect Dreyfus — an earlier street

Reynolds: The Prefect and Elysium Fire may be read alone or jointly, in that order. Machine Vendetta continues that line. Chronology puts them before the melding plague. That is why they look like a prequel trilogy. They are a different job in the same sky.

House rule:

1. Revelation Space, Redemption Ark, Absolution Gap
2. Inhibitor Phase if you want the later novel
3. Chasm City whenever you want a city book, preferably not first
4. The Prefect novels as their own street, after you like the universe or as a later reread of an earlier century

Collections (Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days, Galactic North) can sit anywhere, per Reynolds. They are not novels 5–7.

Revenger and the Ness sisters are a different Reynolds sequence.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Chasm City because it won a prize and looks like book one.
• Starting with The Prefect / Aurora Rising because the utopia is earlier.
• Treating Inhibitor Phase as a standalone reboot.
• Mixing in Revenger as Revelation Space 8.
