Annihilation
It is book one (2014). Authority and Acceptance assume that first expedition. Absolution (2024) is a later fourth book, not a new on-ramp. The film is a cousin of book one only.
Originally a trilogy. Then a fourth novel. Publication order is the path.

House rule: read the three 2014 books. Absolution is optional aftercare that assumes you already have the Area. Do not start there because it is newest.
The Garland film adapts Annihilation and then stops being a trilogy map. Watch it after book one if you want; it will not replace Authority.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Absolution.
- Treating the film as the whole Southern Reach.
- Reading Acceptance first because the title sounds like a conclusion you can sneak up on.
What to read next
- Silo / Wool (Hugh Howey) — If you want another closed system with a prequel that should stay second.
- Broken Earth (N. K. Jemisin) — If you want another finished SFF argument about a landscape that keeps changing the rules.
- The Locked Tomb (Tamsyn Muir) — If you want another series that will not explain its grammar in chapter one.

Do I need Absolution?
No. The 2014 trilogy closes.
Is the film a substitute?
For book one, partly. For the series, no.
Can I read only Annihilation?
Yes. You will be leaving the institution unread.
