Jack Reacher reading order

Do not start with The Enemy, The Affair, Night School, or The Secret because they are earlier in Reacher’s army life. Those are prequels published mid-run. They assume you already know the man who got off the bus.

Andrew Child co-authors from The Sentinel (2020) onward. That is a handoff, not a new series and not a new book one.

Chain Reaction is announced for October 2026. It is not on the shelf yet. Do not wait for it before starting.

Publication order

The official Jack Reacher site lists the novels in written order. US title for book 4 is Running Blind; the UK title is The Visitor. Same book.

The “any order” claim, with exceptions

Most Reacher novels are built as a man arriving in a new town. That is why publishers say you can start anywhere. It is half true.

The exceptions are the point of a reading-order page:

• Prequels in the middle of the list. The Enemy, The Affair, Night School, and The Secret jump backward. Publication order keeps them from becoming accidental book ones.
• A four-book chain. 61 Hours, Worth Dying For, A Wanted Man, and Never Go Back follow one leftover job. Read those four in order even if you hop around elsewhere.
• Recurring names. Neagley, the 110th, and a few family facts accumulate. You can follow a standalone plot without them. You will not follow why the plot is expensive.

House rule: publication order for a first pass. Chronological charts that begin with The Enemy or The Secret are reread toys.

Shorts and the screen

No Middle Name (2017) is a short-story collection, including “Too Much Time.” It is not a numbered novel. Optional cleanup after you already like the voice.

The Prime series is a cousin. Season one draws on Killing Floor; later seasons jump. Season order is not book order. The Tom Cruise films are a different cousin.

Common mistakes

• Starting with The Enemy or The Affair because a “chronological Reacher” list put them first.
• Treating One Shot as book one because you saw a film.
• Skipping the 61 Hours chain and wondering why Never Go Back feels mid-conversation.
• Waiting for Chain Reaction (announced 2026) before opening Killing Floor.
• Searching only “Child” and picking up a later hardcover as an on-ramp.
