Old Man’s War

It is book one (2005). Later novels assume that first enlistment. Do not start with The Human Division. Do not start with The Collapsing Empire.

A finished main sequence with one parallel novel and two later books that change shape. Publication order is the path.

The core novels

2The Ghost Brigades2006Amazon
3The Last Colony2007Amazon
4Zoe's Tale2008Parallel to The Last Colony from Zoe’s POV. After book 3, or skip if you do not want the same campaign twice.Amazon
5The Human Division2013Episode structure. After the first three.Amazon
6The End of All Things2015Amazon

House rule: 1–3, then decide on Zoe’s Tale. Then the two later books if you want more Colonial Union. Zoe’s Tale is not a hidden book one and not required to follow the later volumes.

The Collapsing Empire is the Interdependency. Different door. Redshirts is a standalone. Neither is Old Man’s War 7.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with The Human Division because the episodes look skippable.
  • Treating Zoe’s Tale as book one because it is younger.
  • Mixing in Interdependency titles.
  1. The Expanse (James S. A. Corey) — If you want another finished military-political SF run.
  2. Bobiverse (Dennis E. Taylor) — If you want approachable idea-SF with a correct first book.
  3. Murderbot (Martha Wells) — If you want shorter books about a person who did not ask for the job.
  4. [Old Man’s War, then stop.] The first novel is a complete visit if you want it to be.
  5. Red Rising (Pierce Brown) — If you want a colder climb after a comparatively friendly war.

FAQ
