The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

It is Wayfarers book one (2014). Later books are new doors in the same universe. You can hop after book one. You should still start here if you want the crew that made the shelf famous.

Four novels. Publication order is the kindest path. Chambers built them so each can stand; later books still assume you know how this universe talks.

Extra

To Be Taught, if Fortunate2019Related novella. Same temperature, not a fifth Wayfarers novel and not book one.Amazon

Monk & Robot is a different Chambers series. It is not Wayfarers 5.

House rule: read book one. Continue in publication order if you want more of the universe. Hopping after book one is allowed; starting on book three because it is “the found-family one” still costs you the dialect.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with The Galaxy, and the Ground Within because it is quieter.
  • Treating Monk & Robot as a continuation.
  • Skipping book one because someone said the series is “all standalones.”
  1. The Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells) — If you want another constructed-person voice, sharper.
  2. The Culture (Iain M. Banks) — If you want another SF shelf of separate doors that share a civilization.
  3. [Wayfarers book one, then stop.] It is a complete visit.
  4. Imperial Radch (Ann Leckie) — If you want another finished trilogy about personhood and ships.
  5. Monk & Robot (Becky Chambers) — If you want her other door, as itself.

FAQ

Do I have to read them in order?
