Earthsea reading order
Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea books in publication order — A Wizard of Earthsea through The Other Wind — and why Tehanu is not book one.
Start here
A Wizard of Earthsea
It is book one (1968). Later novels assume that first naming. Do not start with Tehanu. Do not start with The Other Wind.
Publication order is the Earthsea order. The later books change the conversation; they do not rewind it.
The books
| # | Title | Year | Notes | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1968 | Start here. | Amazon | |
| 2 | 1971 | Amazon | ||
| 3 | 1972 | Ends the original three. | Amazon | |
| 4 | 1990 | Later novel. After the first three. Not an on-ramp. | Amazon | |
| 5 | 2001 | Stories. After Tehanu if you want more. | Amazon | |
| 6 | 2001 | Closes the published novel run. | Amazon |
House rule: read the first three, then decide if you want the later Earthsea. Tehanu is written for people who already know the earlier islands. Tales from Earthsea includes pieces that look backward; it is still not book one.
The Studio Ghibli film is a cousin that rearranges. It is not a table of contents.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Tehanu because it is the “grown-up” one.
- Treating the first three as optional preamble.
- Using the Ghibli film as book one.
What to read next
- The Lord of the Rings (J. R. R. Tolkien) — If you want another older secondary world with extras that should stay extras.
- Narnia (C. S. Lewis) — If you want another children’s door with a contested later order.
- [A Wizard of Earthsea through The Farthest Shore, then stop.] The original three are a complete visit.
- The Books of Babel (Josiah Bancroft) — If you want a later finite climb.
- [Earthsea, then Tehanu.] If you want the later argument as aftercare.
FAQ
Do I need the later books?
