Assassin’s Apprentice
It is Farseer book one (1995) and the house door into the Elderlings. Ship of Magic is a real second door. Fool’s Assassin is not a door.
Five trilogies (Rain Wilds is four books) that share a coastline. Publication order by trilogy is the first-read path. Chronological tinkering that starts in the Rain Wilds is how people get lost.

Contested order, labeled: Hobb has said Liveship can be read without Farseer. That is true as a ship trilogy. Tawny Man and Fitz and the Fool assume Farseer. Rain Wilds assume Liveship. House path: Farseer → Liveship → Tawny Man → Rain Wilds → Fitz and the Fool.
You can skip Rain Wilds and still follow Fitz. You will understand less of the later dragon weather.
Common mistakes
- Starting with Fool’s Assassin because the title rhymes with book one.
- Reading Rain Wilds first because you like dragons.
- Stopping after Farseer and then opening Fitz and the Fool years later without Tawny Man.
- Mixing in Soldier Son. Different Hobb shelf.
