Outlander reading order

Nine major novels are out. A tenth, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, is listed on the author’s chronology page as forthcoming. Do not invent a date, and do not wait for it before starting.

The television series is a cousin. Season order follows the early novels more closely than most adaptations, then compresses. It is still not a substitute for book one.

The major novels

Gabaldon calls these the “Big, Enormous Books.” Publication order is the story order.

There is no contested novel sequence. People who argue about Outlander order are usually arguing about Lord John, the graphic novel, or the shorts.

Lord John — after Voyager, not before Outlander

The Lord John novels and novellas are part of the larger series. Gabaldon says they stand alone and that they reference people and situations from the main novels. Her “what to read when” note: you can read them once you have finished Voyager, because they sit in the middle of that book’s timeline.

If you want the Lord John pieces in the author’s listed story order, it runs: “Hellfire Club”; Private Matter; “Succubus”; Brotherhood of the Blade; “Haunted Soldier”; “Custom of the Army”; The Scottish Prisoner; “A Plague of Zombies.” The three middle shorts are in Hand of Devils. You do not need this list on a first Outlander pass.

House rule: novels 1–3, then optional Lord John, then novels 4–9. Or novels only. Do not open the series with a Grey mystery because it looks shorter.

Other extras

Keep these out of the numbered novel column:

• The Exile — graphic novel retelling early material. Not an on-ramp.
• A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows, The Space Between, Virgins, and other novellas — Gabaldon has a chronology for them. First-read: after the novel they sit beside, or not at all.
• Companion cookbooks and guides — reference, not book 6.5.

Common mistakes

• Starting with Lord John because the hardcovers are thinner.
• Using a full chronological chart as book one through thirty.
• Treating the graphic novel as a shortcut around Outlander.
• Waiting for book 10 before starting. Nine novels are already a sequence.
• Assuming the show’s later seasons are a table of contents for books you have not bought yet.

What to read next

1. Bridgerton (Julia Quinn) — If you want another long historical family run where the screen skipped a book and the prequels look like book one.
2. The Lord John novels, after Voyager. If the secondary camera was the pleasure and you want the mystery register Gabaldon built for it.
3. The Witcher novels (Andrzej Sapkowski) — If you came from a screen adaptation and need the actual book order, including shorts that are not optional flavor.
4. Jack Reacher (Lee Child) — If you want a long numbered list that publishers call standalone, with prequels hiding in the middle.
5. Nine novels, then stop. If that was the point, you do not owe the internet every novella.

Is the tenth book out?
Not when last checked. The author’s chronology names it. No on-sale date is used here.
